Relaxed Farming Food: Broad bean
Click to return to the previous page...
Broad beans are very easy to grow, though they do need 'netting' or 'sticks' to help them keep upright. When they are about 1.5m high the tops may be 'pinched out' (take the top of the plant between finger and thumb and pinch to remove) to stop vertical growth and to encourage the beans to grow. In the kitchen - pop them into boiling water for a couple of minutes and then enjoy, athough we also eat them raw in salads. If there are loads of beans they may be 'blanched (popped into boiling water for a few minutes) and then allowed to cool, bagged up and popped into the freezer.
Just a week or so after planting the seeds have produced healthy plants.
Relaxed Farming
Our broad beans starting to grow and to set flowers - each flower should turn into a broad bean pod, and each pod may have up to six or so beans. The photo below was taken on 7thMay and shows the broad beans which were planted on the 8th April.
