Relaxed Farming Food: Dwarf French bean
Click to return to the previous page...
Dwarf French beans produce a mass of small slender beans which are best picked and cooked when they are young and tender. We often give them a wash in the kitchen sink and then nibble them as we prepare the rest of the meal, finishing the last few off by steaming for a couple of minutes! We sometimes plant the seeds in pots and then transplant them when they have their second set of leaves - as the year progresses and the soil gets warmer we plant the seeds in groups of three directly into the polytunnel beds using our three for one rule: one seed for the pests, one for the weather and one for us!
A wealth of young and tender beans ready for picking.
Relaxed Farming
The dwarf French bean seeds sprout quite quickly, and if the soil conditions are right (warm, damp and clear of weeds) we get a very good germination rate - athough we do need to keep the slugs away as they adore the tender shoots! This set of plants were sown on 9th May and the photo below was taken just over two weeks later on the 25th.
