Relaxed Farming Food: Pumpkin
Click to return to the previous page...
Pumpkins are often know as the vegetable which is hollowed out, the skin cut through to form a face and a candle placed inside - all ready for Halloween. The variety we are growing forms fruits which are far too small for this type of activity, so we just have to eat them! Pumpkin pie is often seen as a delicacy, but we prefer roasted pumpkin - just cut into larger than bite sized pieces, toss in olive oil and pop into the oven alongside potato chunks which have been boiled for 20 minutes. Wait until they are looking crispy and then serve with greens and (unless you are a veggie) meat of your choice.
The pumpkin hiding below weighs in at 3.4kg and is just one of about 20 that are growing on the two plants in the polytunnel.
When is a pumpkin ready for picking? When it is orange/yellow and sounds hollow when tapped!
Relaxed Farming
The variety of pumpkin we are growing is one called Jack O' Lantern. The seeds were planted in pots on 8th April and the first signs of growth were seen ten days later. We transplanted the seedlings on 4th May, and since then the plants have grown, and grown, and grown! The photo below show the flower (closed for the night) and the beginnings of a pumpkin on 2nd July.
