Relaxed Farming Food: Salad
Click to return to the previous page...
Salad is a catch all name for a variety of leaves and plants, from radish to Kos lettuce, from mustard to Pak Choi! In all cases it is vital to eat the plants when they are young, otherwise they may get rather tough to eat and can be quite bitter to the taste. However, salad leaves and plants are prolific in their growth, and when the soil has warmed up will reach maturity within just a couple of weeks!! We sow the seeds on a regular basis every couple of weeks from the beginning of March until October. This gives us a continuous crop of salad for the table - though it is vital to make sure we thoroughly wash all the leaves and plants before we eat them!
And how do we eat them? As a side dish for main meals, ripped into pieces and tossed in sesame oil, chopped garlic and onion, or in a sandwich with homemade goat cheese and gherkin!

Relaxed Farming
Besides growing rocket (left hand photo) we also grow a number of seed 'mixes', readily available from most seed merchants and garden centres. The seed packets contain a variety of types of plant, typically for the ones in the photo below are Red Giant Mustard, Green Wave Mustard and Mizuna Kyoto! We have no idea which is which, but we do know that the darker leaves are very spicy, particularly when they get large!
