Have just finished reading a book about a couple who tried to be totally self-sufficient in all they did: not just growing their own food but making their own clothes, soap, drinks, paper... if the ingredients weren't on their land, they did without.
Funny thing is they still had to buy in all the feed for their animals otherwise the whole system broke down. And with current rules and regulations about what you can and cannot feed your livestock, did they have any choice?
We can claim to be virtually self-sufficient in meat and veg: if we don't grow or rear it we do without but we still buy in the margarine and the bread and the olive oil that are all part of the liver and marrow dish below. Oh, and the sweetcorn! So, what does being self-sufficient really mean? In today's world it may well mean that you have to go without a lot of things because it would be impossible to grow/make them yourselves. Food for thought?
And meanwhile, we can report that the dish below was VERY nice! And the more so no doubt because most of it WAS grown/reared by us!!! Can you identify the meat and vegetable ingredients we have used? Here they are in a jumbled up order: coriander, marrow, sweetcorn, onion, liver, greens.
