Thursday, 31st October 2013

We have not had another daytime visit from the fox, but we see at least one most nights if we go round the smallholding with the torch. Yesterday morning the main chicken paddock was full of badger scrapings where a badger had been digging and turning back the turf: we are not really impressed with this; the mud is already taking over the grass in places without Mr Brock helping!!
And talking of mud, these young chickens are all voting with their feet (literally) and as soon as they are out of the pop-hole in the mornings they make their way round to the front of the barn to spend the day raking around in the goat and sheep straw. They do have their own straw in their own corner of the barn but in these particular cases, the Red Leghorns and the bantams prefer to be away from the hustle and bustle of being with all the other chickens. The bantams especially are not overly fond of being in with the 'big' girls and boys, despite the fact that is where the food and water is! We do also worry about their VERY feathered feet: mud is not the best surface for them to be walking around on so we are soft, we let them stay in the main barn and have even been known to give them their afternoon corn there... though as the end photo shows, they did not even wait for me to get it out of the jug before starting to eat it this afternoon!! Very sweet!!
