This is a view of the entire chicken paddock. It is not a massively large area (approximately 30 metres by 20 metres) but nonetheless the 11 turkeys, two geese, three ducks and 16 chickens are not very visible. Look hard enough and you can just see a few turkeys on the right, one on a roof!!! (Must get their wings clipped again). The birds are all there (this shot was taken a few days ago), behind bushes, in the houses laying eggs, we think there were a few in the far left corner, out of range. The good thing is that the area is big enough that they can all 'disappear' and yet still be there.
The very strange thing though is that without even counting, we can tell when they really have disappeared because with numbers such as these, we can tell when we are a few missing. And so it was that without doing a definite head count, it was obvious this afternoon that our numbers were down. And after an actual head count, we realised that both of our Plymouth Rock chickens had vanished. There was no sign of any feathers, the other birds seemed okay and a quick look round did not find them lurking elsewhere on the holding!!! All very weird! Our conclusions: a VERY sneaky fox has taken them, leaving not a shred of evidence or they have found somewhere else better to be. If they don't appear at corn time tomorrow, we shall fear the worst!!!
