Photos such as the one below of Pygmy goats Nutmeg and Thyme (daughter and mother) capture what a joy it is to run our smallholding and what a privilege it is to be able to share our lives with all these delightful animals. Most days there are worries or niggles, most days we wish we had managed to make our 'to do' list just that little bit smaller but there is usually something every single day to make us smile or feel proud or be amazed at.
Today has been a bit of a 'where are we at' day: a day to check we are ready for all our imminent births and hatchings. We are now just a day away from Onion's first possible due date, we don't think she will give birth tomorrow as her udder is not quite 'bagged up' yet. Jack thinks Sunday, David thinks Saturday!! Pear is fortunately still showing signs of being committed to her eggs after yesterday's 'house' move. She spent a fair bit of time today pecking and dabbling round the paddock but returned to the nest in the evening AND she laid another egg!!
Good news again for the alpacas as their latest worm count came back with another low reading meaning the worms are not a problem for them and we don't need to worm them! Not such great news on the quail front though: still no eggs! According to other breeders, they should be laying by the end of this month so we will continue to keep our fingers crossed.
Tomorrow we hope to candle the turkey and guinea fowl eggs under Katherine: she has been a fab broody so far and her eggs remain warm and clean!!!
So, as is the case most days: good news/not such good news/events to wait for/events to hope for!! Exciting, nerve racking and never a dull moment!!!
