Another day of waiting: Onion is still pregnant and we are now starting to think that Sage or Thyme, both due from Friday might beat her to it and give birth first... Here she is sitting back on her haunches, still looking starry-eyed but still hanging onto her kids! One side is slightly bigger than the other and we are wondering whether there might be twins in there (normal) or one huge kid. Twins are preferred; one huge kid might have problems coming out!! The slightly bigger side might signify that the kid or kids have moved slightly - we are not sure!!!
Next up is Crumpet (our brown rabbit) - she has spent most of her day really snuggled up in a lovely comfy nest in her house. We have moved her to a house on her own as she needs to be alone to give birth (see 31st January for more on this). Rabbits don't usually go too many days beyond their due dates so we are hoping for baby rabbits in the next 24-48 hours or so! And do you know what baby rabbits are called? Kittens!!!
We are also waiting to candle our duck eggs, we need to wait a few more days yet though as Pear has only properly been sitting for three-four days and it is usually not until day seven that growth starts to show!! It is going to be hard to catch her off the nest mind you as she has hardly been off in the last two days!!
And finally our quail who are delighting us with their fabulous singing all day, every day - but are still NOT laying any eggs. However, yesterday we saw one of the males mating with one of the females so that was a good sign!!!...
You certainly need patience to run a smallholding...
