'He-who-needs-a-name' has had a great first full day on the smallholding - he is proving to be a very friendly chap and certainly likes company. At times today when he has NOT been getting attention he has been heard making rather sad bleating noises... poor thing!!
It has been a fabulously sunny day so we walked him down to one of the empty paddocks so he could have a run on the grass AND start to meet the rest of the Relaxed herd, albeit through the fence! On the way down, Jupiter and Neptune popped their heads over the fence of the poultry area to have a jolly good look at the newcomer. As you can see they were quite fascinated. 'He-who-needs-a-name' however did not return the favour and seemed very uninterested in them...
When we first put him in the paddock, he spent several minutes walking right around the perimeter as though he was checking it out. He then went inside the house and made sure that was okay too... It was great to see him behaving so confidently but then he rather spoilt it all because as soon as we started to walk back to the gate to go out, he ran straight after us bleating, as if to say: 'please don't leave me!!'
Some of the others goats came down to see what was going on. There followed a head-butting session with Pepper through the fence (normal goat behaviour especially between males) and a nose to nose smelling session with Thyme. We have a feeling that Thyme may be about to come into season, if so we will need to keep the two of them apart as we really don't want to start breeding quite yet. Any matings now would mean mid-February births which is a little too early for us!!
Our request for names has so far produced the following: Treacle, Dill, Mint, Marmite, Soya (plus a few others). We think we may like one or two of these but will see if we get any other ideas in the next few days!
