Like mother, like daughter!! This is Parsley and Satin (Parsley on the left, Satin on the right), each of them demonstrating that there is no elegant and polite way to eat hay... you just yank as much as you can out of the hayrack, stuff it into the mouth and start chewing!!!! Satin is now almost three months old and as you can see, her fur is getting lighter and lighter (check out the photo of her from 5th July - the day she was born!). She is now a much duskier black/grey, unlike her mother who is jet black. They are however, remarkably alike to look at: each has the white triangle on the face, white 'splodges' on the body, the head shape is the same and they are both quite long legged.
We have mentioned before that pygmy goat kids do NOT always take after their parents with regards to their colouring, BUT they do when it comes to face and body shapes so Satin is unusual in that she does both. We usually find that characters and behaviours are also passed on from parent to kid, so Pepper is naughty like his mum Onion and Nutmeg is very sweet like her mum Thyme. At the moment it is too early to say if Satin is going to be like Parsley. Parsley is friendly but not too cheeky but Satin is proving very shy just now. We did think that when the other kids went to their new homes, she might get less shy and more confident with us, but at the moment she is very skittish and often runs away when we approach.
We thought we had a buyer for her as ideally we would like to sell her but it didn't work out... as usual when we are selling our animals we are anxious about finding a good home and want to get it right!!!
In other news, we 'think' we might be on top of the red mite problem in the chicken house; we have decided we need to resort to some electric fencing to keep Marmite in his paddock and today we sold out of chicken eggs!!
Finally, the grass seed we sowed on the bank by our new drainage ditch is starting to sprout and just as quickly is being eaten by the chickens and turkeys... hmmmmmm!!!!
