Monday, 20th October 2014

Our dogs are a massive part of our smallholding: from left to right we have Buzzard (Gordon Setter), Rabbit (Springador), Yeti (Munsterlander) and Lobster (Gordon Setter). They are all in their 'we are resting/asleep, please don't disturb us' moods , all except Yeti that is, we are not sure she ever sleeps - she always seems to have at least one eye open, ready to shoot off for her next adventure. Yeti is the only girl, and like the boys is neutered: neutering describes the operation whereby an animal's sexual organs are removed so they cannot breed.
We are very proud of our dogs at the moment as we 'think' they have managed to scare our badger away from our top paddock. Back on 8th October we described how a badger (or as we soon realised badgerS - we have two) was digging up our main poultry area looking for worms and other minibeasts. He/they then moved up to the top paddock where the poultry themselves has been moved to and started digging there.
Each night when our dogs go out for their last wees, we have been giving them access to the top paddock by leaving the gate open and we believe that their smell and their barking may have scared the badgers away. We do still see a badger occasionally but the really bad digging has stopped - for the moment!!
So, the four dogs deserve their sleep on our comfy carpets and chairs don't you think?
