Dear Nutmeg and Garlic have both had runny noses. This is not uncommon and whilst we are not entirely sure why they have them, we know that a little like a cold in humans, this is not too serious. Neither of them have had any other symptoms: no high temperature, no sneezing or coughing - all they have in fact are snotty noses (lovely!!!) as you can see from the photos.
We spoke to our vet when after a few days it was obvious that they were not getting any better and he recommended giving the goats some antibiotics. We always have one antibiotic in our smallholding medicine kit and it is known as a 'broad spectrum' antibiotic. This means it can treat a 'range' of problems in our animals (goats, sheep and alpacas) and so the vet suggested we try giving them both a shot of it. One shot (or injection using a syringe) lasts a few days and if necessary, a second one may be given. We gave the first back on 19th and it definitely seemed to help so we gave another shot to both of the goats today to try to totally kill off any germs.
Hopefully this will clear it up completely. Fingers crossed!! As kidding time gets ever closer (last week in February), we want to make sure all the goats are in really good condition and as fit and healthy as possible!
