As the photos show, our broodies continue to do battle for the best nests and eggs: Victoria, the bronze turkey, has most definitely been wanting her own clutch and after several days of stealing eggs from other birds, we have now given her a set of turkey ones. Unfortunately we only have half a dozen though as all the rest were given to Katherine/Josephine who are sharing a nestful (32 at the last count) in another house. Having said that, Josephine's interest has dropped rather a lot since Katherine joined her, and Katherine seems to be doing most of the work now.
Queenie, our golden Bantam, wins the award for the most patient broody as she has had to endure at least three other birds trying to steal her eggs over the last two weeks. We have sorted two of them (Victoria and our lavender bantam) by giving them their own set but today, our black bantam decided she wanted Queenie's eggs and she squawked hugely when we took a look at what was going on. When we last checked, Queenie had three and the black bantam two... Three points to Queenie then and another broody to sort tomorrow!!
Once hatching starts, we think it is going to be even more chaotic...
Curds continues to improve although we are still bottle feeding Sandy as there is not yet enough milk for both him and Pebbles and Curds also seems quite tender when the kids try to suckle. Pebbles did take some milk today but not a lot. She always has been a little skinnier than her brother but neither kid is looking out of condition at all. They are now eating some of the goat mix each day which means that they are not totally dependent on mum's milk which, in light of there not being enough, is just as well.
One day we will have a quiet and uneventful day on the smallholding - or maybe not!!!
