Jennie Kerwin: Writer and maths consultant
It was pretty likely that Jennie would end up being a teacher when as a small child she used to teach neighbours' children maths on a chalk board in her garage - whether they liked it or not! She taught in primary schools in the West Midlands and enjoyed taking children out of the city to explore the countryside, climbing, biking, canoeing, making dens etc. Some of these 'city kids' confused horses with cows and couldn't believe how big pigs were! Later she was the South West regional director for the National Numeracy Strategy which meant a move from the city. Her family learned the delights of keeping poultry (no eggs taste quite as good as those laid by your own birds).
For the last 10 years she has been self-employed writing for the maths scheme Abacus, maths plans for Hamilton Trust, teaching maths on a primary PGCE and supporting teachers in schools including those in 'challenging circumstances'. She now lives in Cornwall with her husband, two teenage sons and 'little' dog Zoe. She's dreamed of keeping sheep since a young girl and she and her family hope to have a smallholding in the near future. She's delighted to be part of the Relaxed team, bringing farming closer to children.
