Relaxed Farming - our farm in your classroom

We have a set number of eggs we can lay in our life when we are born so the number of eggs we will lay in our lifetime is already set. This is because each egg begins life as an 'ova' or egg cell and these are all within the young chick from day one.

Some breeds such as the Hybrids (like the Beechwood Blue and me) lay most of their eggs in the first two years of our lives and then after that we lay fewer each year. Some of the pure breeds (such as the Orpingtons) spread out their laying more evenly over the years.

Our eggs come in all sorts of colours: browns, whites, blues, creams, greens... And they all taste the same! Well actually there is a HUGE difference between free-range eggs and battery eggs but that is to do with the natural food we eat and NOT the colour of the egg shell!!
