Relaxed FarmingWhy keep chickens... (as answered by our Beechwood Blue). I am one of two BBs on the Relaxed smallholding. We are Hybrid birds (birds that have two different types as parents, in my case a Rhode Island Red and a Maran) and are friendly, calm and great layers - which brings me neatly onto why people keep chickens...

  • For the eggs, eggs and more eggs: chickens lay eggs, lots and lots of them and humans love eggs. Eggs are a fabulous food providing protein, minerals, vitamins (including Vitamin D, which is good for bones) and some fat. If you think about it, one egg contains ALL the nutrients a developing chick needs to grow so no wonder they contain so much goodness.

Eggs are also hugely versatile (meaning they can be used in lots of different ways) and can be cooked as themselves (fried, poached, boiled, scrambled) as well as used as an ingredient in loads of recipes: cakes, biscuits, mayonnaise, meringue, omelettes, quiches, custards... the list is endless.

Eggs are also great for dogs (and the Relaxed smallholding has four) as it makes their coats shine and they LOVE them. I should add that we also like eating our own eggs - that may sound a bit weird and our owners definitely don't encourage it - but if you think about it, if they are so good for you humans, they must be good for us too!!

Eggs keep for ages, up to four weeks and as long as we are looked after, us chickens will just keep on laying...
