Pear's Ducklings - our first week: February 2016
9th
10th
11th 12th 13th 14th/15th

Day One: 10th February: Today we moved mum, ducklings AND the nest (complete with all those warm downy feathers that, when she first started to incubate the eggs, Pear plucked from her own breast) into our enclosed aviary in the barn. She can now look after her ducklings in peace and quiet for a few days before they start to mix with the other birds - and (if the weather improves) even get to go outside. There are ten ducklings altogether, a brilliant hatch rate (10 from 11 eggs).
Pear had a jolly good feed and drink today although as yet, her ducklings have not had anything. They don't actually need to feed, as for the first 24/48 hours they get all their nutrients from the remains of the egg yolk that is now inside their abdomen. Today they were simply quite happy to stay in the nest all huddled together, keeping warm. We expect to see them a bit more out and about tomorrow...
