Pear's Ducklings - our first week: February 2016
9th
10th 11th 12th 13th 14th/15th

Hatched: 9th February: We knew that the ducklings must be starting to hatch this evening as Pear did not come off the nest for her corn treat and when we approached her she hissed at us... Muscovy duck speak for 'GO AWAY'. We took a sneaky peek a little later to find some fairly sleepy ducklings all snuggled up as they tried to keep warm. A couple of hours later we caught mum turning around and tried to do a quick head count - there were 11 eggs and we reckon nearly all may have hatched.
Muscovy ducks sit for around 35 days on the nest and do tend to hatch out most of their eggs. They also make fabulous mums although Pear's choice of nest box is maybe not that great: she is a metre or so off the ground in a box in the barn that the chickens usually use to lay their eggs in. Tomorrow we will move the whole family to our indoor aviary away from the other birds. All will be fine tonight as neither mum or ducklings will leave the nest!!
