Relaxed FarmingWhy keep chickens... (as answered by our Beechwood Blue). I am one of two BBs on the Relaxed smallholding. We are Hybrid birds (birds that have two different types as parents, in my case a Rhode Island Red and a Maran) and are friendly, calm and great layers - which brings me neatly onto why people keep chickens...

  • We don't cost too much to keep: whilst we need special pellets to eat, if we free range, we can get a lot of food from the ground (especially in the summer) and so we won't eat as much of the pelleted stuff. This makes us quite cheap to keep - although we still need bedding for our house and sawdust for the nest boxes and of course a house itself!!

We don't have to have expensive equipment either: basic food and water containers should not cost you too much.

Finally we don't often need the vet!!!

PLUS, if you have any spare eggs you can legally sell them to your friends and neighbours and so use the money to help buy our next bag of feed.

We really will find a lot of food in the grass
