Relaxed FarmingWhy keep chickens... (as answered by our Beechwood Blue). I am one of two BBs on the Relaxed smallholding. We are Hybrid birds (birds that have two different types as parents, in my case a Rhode Island Red and a Maran) and are friendly, calm and great layers - which brings me neatly onto why people keep chickens...

  • We are very well behaved: on the whole that is... if we are allowed to free range and you don't give us access to your prized garden, you will hardly notice we are there!!! We do scratch around in the grass but as long as we have enough and you move us to a new area from time to time, we won't turn your land into a mud bath.

We don't make too much noise. Well the cockerels do crow a bit but it isn't actually necessary to keep a cockerel - not unless you want fertile eggs and to hatch out some chicks that is - we do quite like our cockerels mind you... but more of them later.

We don't tend to bite or peck, we don't need taking for walks or brushing, we are not fussy eaters and we don't even mind if you leave us for a day or two (as long as there is someone to shut the door at night and keep the fox out) and talking of which most of us even put ourselves to bed on time (unlike those ducks...).
