Relaxed FarmingWhy keep chickens... (as answered by our Beechwood Blue). I am one of two BBs on the Relaxed smallholding. We are Hybrid birds (birds that have two different types as parents, in my case a Rhode Island Red and a Maran) and are friendly, calm and great layers - which brings me neatly onto why people keep chickens...

  • Our poo is great for your garden and vegetables: in common with most poo from most animals on the smallholding, our poo makes a great fertilizer for your grass, gardens and vegetables and our owners put all ours on the compost heap to rot down with everyone elses and the old bedding.

You do need to be careful though as chicken poo is very high in nitrogen and so must not be put straight onto the plants because it is so strong it might actually kill them. It also contains high levels of ammonia which is bad for us so we don't like it left in our house for too long either. More of this later under 'How to look after us'.
